Holidays
Learn more about Veterans Day
Veterans Day is a renowned annual holiday in the United States that honors individuals who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. It is celebrated on November 11 every year, corresponding with Armistice Day and Remembrance Day celebrated in other countries that mark the anniversary of the end of World War I. Initially named "Armistice Day," in the U.S, the holiday was renamed "Veterans Day" in 1954 to pay tribute to all veterans and not just those who served in World War I. This day is a federal holiday, meaning that many schools and businesses are closed in remembrance and to show appreciation for the nation's veterans. Parades, ceremonies, and other events are often held in various communities across the country to commemorate this special event. Veterans Day should not be confused with Memorial Day; the latter honors those who died in service to the country, while Veterans Day honors all U.S military veterans.
Fun Fact
Did you know that Veterans Day was initially known as Armistice Day? It was first observed in the United States on Nov. 11, 1919, to commemorate the end of World War I. The day marked the cessation of the deadliest conflict the world had seen up until that point. However, in 1954, it was officially renamed as Veterans Day to honor all U.S veterans who have served in any capacity and during any American wars, conflicts, and service periods. The day isn't to be confused with Memorial Day, which pays tribute to those who lost their lives while serving. Veterans Day acknowledges and appreciates all who have served—alive and deceased.Share & Embed
