Did you know that in the United States, Mother's Day was first proposed by Anna Jarvis in 1905, the year her own mother passed away? Jarvis organized the first formal Mother's Day celebration in 1908 in a Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia, and started a massive campaign to make "Mother's Day" a recognized holiday in the US. She succeeded in 1914 when President Woodrow Wilson officially established the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day. An interesting twist is that Jarvis soon became disillusioned by the commercialization of the holiday, and spent much of her later life trying to remove it from the calendar.
