Learn more about New Year
New Year is a celebration universally observed on January 1st, marking the beginning of a new calendar year. The advent of the New Year has been an occasion of revelry and reflection since ancient times. Different cultures across the world celebrate it in unique ways, often marked by social gatherings, fireworks, and resolutions for self-improvement. Before January 1st, there is often a countdown to midnight symbolizing the transition into the New Year. Celebrations can vary widely, but the common thread is the hopeful anticipation of a fresh start and new beginnings. States, regions, and cultures with their own calendars may celebrate their New Year at different times, however, the Gregorian New Year is globally recognized and celebrated.
Fun Fact
Did you know that the New Year didn't always begin on January 1st? In fact, the earliest recording of a new year celebration dates back to 4,000 years ago in ancient Babylon. But they celebrated the new year during the first new moon following the vernal equinox in late March. It wasn't until 46 B.C. that Julius Caesar introduced the Julian calendar, which mirrored the solar year more closely and set January 1st as the first day of the year. However, even then England and its colonies continued to celebrate New Year's on March 25th until as late as 1752! So, as we toast to the New Year on January 1st, remember, New Year's celebrations have a history that's as complex as the calendars themselves.Share & Embed
