Learn more about Independence Day
Independence Day, commonly known as the Fourth of July, is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. The Declaration of Independence effectively marked the United States' independence from Great Britain's rule. On this day, the American Continental Congress declared that the thirteen American colonies were sovereign states, no longer under British rule, forming a new nation - the United States of America. The day is associated with patriotic displays, barbecues, picnics, concerts, baseball games, and political speeches and ceremonies, in addition to various other public and private events celebrating the history and traditions of the United States. Fireworks have been associated with Independence Day since the earliest celebrations in the 18th century.
Fun Fact
Did you know that the celebration of the Fourth of July, also known as Independence Day, wasn't actually declared a federal holiday until 1870, which is nearly 100 years after the nation declared its independence in 1776? Also, interestingly, both Thomas Jefferson and John Adams, two founding fathers who signed the Declaration of Independence, died on July 4th, 1826. Their death even increased the historic significance of the Independence Day.Share & Embed
